What the extra layers actually do
The second and third layers are not decoration. They let you split one film into functional zones: a virgin print skin, a core that carries recycled resin or filler, and a seal skin tuned for the bag machine.
On a monolayer line the same film must do all of it at once — which is why monolayer film usually needs more virgin resin per kilogram of strength.

- The core layer can carry up to about 30% recycled or CaCO₃-filled material with no visible surface defect
- Barrier, stiffness and puncture resistance are added without a lamination step

Monolayer is not the budget compromise it is sometimes described as. For a single-resin film with a straightforward bag specification, one extruder means fewer wearing parts, a smaller footprint, less installed power and a faster changeover.

What a 3-layer line costs to run
A 3-layer line carries more extruders, so it draws more power and needs more maintenance attention. That cost is real and should be paid back by the film, not by hope.
The payback normally comes from three places: cheaper core resin (recycled or filled), less total resin at equal strength, and a film that can be sold into a higher-value application than a plain liner.

1-layer and 3-layer co-extrusion are standard build; 5-layer lines are built to order against a confirmed barrier specification. A 5-layer line is specified against a confirmed barrier requirement (typically an EVOH or PA core with tie layers) rather than bought from a catalogue.
If your specification can be met with three layers, five layers will not improve the bag — it will only add extruders, sensors and spares to maintain. We will say so before you order.

Is a 3-layer film blowing machine better than a monolayer machine?
Only if the film needs more than one material function. A 3-layer line lets the core carry recycled or filled resin and lets the two skins be different materials — that is worth paying for when your film must print, seal and hold strength at the same time. For a single-resin HDPE or LDPE bag film, a monolayer line makes the same bag with fewer extruders and less installed power.

Can a monolayer machine run recycled material?
Yes, but the recycled content is limited: because the same resin forms the print and seal surface, recycled or filled material shows up on the outside of the film. On a 3-layer ABA line the recycled resin runs in the core layer only — up to roughly 30% — so surface quality and seal strength are unaffected.
What film width and output can each configuration reach?
The monolayer line covers 600–1,200 mm folded width at 30–120 kg/h; the ABA 3-layer line covers 100–1,200 mm at 40–120 kg/h; the IBC 3-layer line runs 2,600 mm folded width at 500 kg/h.
Do I need 5 layers instead of 3?
